Since 2011

Attention! We are now proud to offer DPS School Safety Certification! We have already trained two west Texas school districts and looking to add more. One superintendent said, "you take it to the next level." Additionally, we are providing church safety team training and development.

West Texas Tactical Defense (WTTD) specializes in and offers Texas License to Carry classes (formerly CHL), Foundational Handgun Skills, and more advanced defensive handgun, rifle, and shotgun skills training to include specialized training at the request of our clients.

WTTD started in 2011 when Scott Irwin began providing Concealed Handgun License classes in Loraine, Texas, to benefit Mitchell County and the surrounding areas. Rick Grissam began assisting Scott as a Range Safety Officer in 2012, and instructing firearms skills and safety classes. Classes are now routinely held in Colorado City, Sterling City, Roscoe, and Big Spring. Occasionally, classes may be held in other communities in the area.

License to Carry classes are scheduled and advertised to the community. Private groups of 4 or more may request they have their own class in any or all of the training classes we offer. We will also provide individual instruction.

Scott Irwin is a former tactical operator for the US Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Special Operations Response Team, aka: SORT. Additionally, Scott has been a firearms instructor and officer self-defense/safety trainer for the United States Courts, US Probation and Pretrial Services. He is a Texas Department of Public Safety certified License to Carry instructor and a certified Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) instructor and firearms instructor. He received his training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA, and Charleston, SC.

Rick Grissam is a judge in Mitchell County, Texas. He is a long time State of Texas Peace Officer, and currently a reserve police officer in one of the communities we serve. Additionally, he is a member of the Loraine, TX, Volunteer Fire Department.

Together Scott and Rick have over 25 years of law enforcement experience.
